History of Declo

Declo is known for its extensive irrigation networks. The town got its name back in 1916 and transformed from a dessert to farmland using water from the Snake River. The fertile riverbank farmlands rise to flat plains before ascending to the Albion Mountains. Declo was originally Marshfield, but the Central Post Office chose to rename it to a five-letter word derived from the names of the first five people to enter the post. You can read more about Cassia County Towns and their name origins. With the availability of water and farmlands, settlers arrived in the town looking to harness its natural resources. However, its rural setup and small size meant it could only support a small population.
